In a blog entry for the Washington Post, Mathew Schmalz, associate professor of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross, explores the intersection between Catholicism and feminism by telling a story about an Indian woman named Rashmi, who he met more than 20 years ago.
"Rashmi’s own understanding of her identity as a woman and a Catholic was shaped by her own cultural and social context,” writes Schmalz. “If we see gender as a factor that shapes discourse about what it means to be Catholic, then we also have to be sensitive to the influence of class, race, and ethnicity."
