Visual Arts Studio Major to Document Year in France Through Sketches and Photography

O’Keefe '11 to share experiences and artwork on blog

Mary Kate O’Keefe ’11 fell in love with the French language about eight years ago, and that marked the first time she wanted to visit a French-speaking country. A few years ago, she fulfilled her wish by visiting the land known for food, wine and culture — an experience she describes as “enriching and exciting.”

The trip made her long for an even lengthier stay, so this year she’ll be studying at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France.

“I chose France because of the unparalleled art scene, rich history, fabulous food, as well as the ‘je ne sais quoi’ that many travelers attempt to describe regarding their experiences in France,” she says.

A visual arts studio major with a double minor in French and art history, art will be a focal point of O’Keefe’s studies and travels. She will document the entire experience in two media: sketch and photography. She will share some of her experiences and artwork in a blog.

In addition to her coursework and taking part in the vibrant art scene, O’Keefe, from Malvern, Pa., has other plans on her agenda, too.

“I would really love to meet a lot of new people from varying backgrounds, get closer to my Holy Cross travel companions, and visit some neighboring countries in Europe. Top on my list is Italy — another art lover’s paradise!”
