Students in the visual arts department at Holy Cross learn how to critically examine and express themselves through art. Their hard work is personally and academically rewarding.
The department offers a major or minor in either studio art or art history. Studio art emphasizes an experimental attitude toward materials, independent thought and the acquisition of technical skills. Students work with a variety of media, including photography, sculpture, painting, digital media, printmaking and drawing. Student work is frequently exhibited on campus, including the Cantor Art Gallery.
Art history provides a full range of courses from ancient to contemporary, and promotes critical inquiry and analysis. Auspiciously located in the heart of the Commonwealth, students take regular trips to Worcester, Boston and New York galleries and museums.
Faculty members, many of whom are working artists, are passionately engaged educators. The College's student to faculty ratio of 10 to 1 — among the best in the country — allows students to receive one-on-one mentoring that ensures they reach their highest potential.
