Three Holy Cross Students Recognized in Colleges of Worcester Consortium Art Exhibition

Holy Cross students received the second and third place prizes and an honorable mention in the seventh annual Colleges of Worcester Consortium Art Exhibition at ARTSWorcester. All three students are visual (studio) art majors, and coincidentally created the works for different courses taught by Susan Schmidt, associate professor of visual arts at Holy Cross.

Cory Mims ’11, of Los Angeles, received second prize for his abstract piece called “Panacea” which was created using mixed media.

“The funny thing about the forms I create is what people think they are,” says Mims. “People have called them intestines, clouds, and muscles but to be honest I do not associate the forms with anything. I let the viewer decide what they think the work depicts.”

Wilza Jean ’11, of Bridgewater, Mass., took the third prize for her oil painting on wood titled “Shades of Ireland” and is similarly abstract in nature.

“I focus heavily on lines, lights and shadows while using the human body as my inspiration,” she says. “My most recent art work is open to interpretation, vibrant in color and very abstract creating a dream-like image.”

Finally, Kieran Padgett ’11, of Larchmont, N.Y., received an honorable mention for his artist’s book called “Untitled 21 Ska-doo.”

Their work can be seen at the ARTSWorcester’s Aurora Gallery, 600 Main St., through March 3.
