The Right Decision

Classics major who fell in love with Holy Cross on first visit blogs about her first year

Even before visiting, Melissa Browne ’12 knew she was going to attend Holy Cross because of its stellar classics department. But she was absolutely smitten the second she set foot on the campus.

“As soon as I saw just how gorgeous it was, especially Fenwick Hall, I knew I wanted to attend Holy Cross,” she says. “I loved its studious air, the New England feel, and its general emphasis on learning in order to gain understanding, not just knowledge. It helped that everyone I met was incredibly nice.”

Browne, from Drexel Hill, Pa., applied to Holy Cross as an Early Decision candidate. Now she’s on a mission to increase the number of students from her regional area by blogging about her first-year at Holy Cross.

“I want to blog because of the influence that Colleen Curran’s blog had on reassuring myself that Holy Cross was the right school for me,” she says. “I loved how honest it was; when she felt bogged down with work, she said it. When she was having lots of fun, she said that, too! Also, I especially want to encourage more people from my area, the mid-Atlantic, to come here!”

Browne’s first-year experience is bound to be interesting. The Class of 2012 is the first to experience Montserrat, the College’s new universal program for first-year students designed to integrate more effectively academic, co-curricular and residential experiences. She is enrolled in “The Self,” one of five thematic clusters in the program.

The bubbly classics major plans on writing for the Crusader, the student newspaper, and singing in the Chapel Choir. She’ll also be tutoring for the classics department and working in Kimball Dining Hall.
