Ready for Something New

Brandi Ramos ’12 invites readers to her blog as she writes about her first-year adventures

Brandi Ramos ’12 chose to attend Holy Cross because it was close enough to her hometown, the campus was small, and everyone she came across was welcoming.

The last two reasons are especially important. Ramos says she got lost several times during her first visit. “There was always someone willing to point me in the right direction, which just goes to show how friendly the people are around here,” she says.

After living in the small town of Maynard all her life and attending a small high school that she says only offered opportunities to get involved in student government, music and sports, she’s ready to try new things. She’s excited about choosing from the many opportunities available at Holy Cross and the city of Worcester.

“I wanted to go to a small college because, as stated earlier, I have a tendency to get lost fairly easily. I want to branch out and try new things at my leisure which is why Holy Cross’ location in Worcester is appealing,” she says.

Now the first-year student is inviting everyone along for the ride (even those who lack a sense of direction). Ramos is blogging about her first-year on the Holy Cross Web site.

“I remember very well how terrifying it can be to have to pick one — and only one — college to attend. I want to provide high school students an honest glimpse of life on the Hill,” she says.

We’re pretty sure Ramos made the right decision to come to Holy Cross. Beginning this year, all first-year students will take part in Montserrat, the College’s new universal program designed to integrate more effectively academic, co-curricular and residential experiences. Montserrat is designed to welcome students to the Holy Cross community and make their four years on the Hill even richer and more meaningful. She is enrolled in “Core Human Questions,” one of five thematic clusters in the program.

A biology major, Ramos plans on joining the Holy Cross Science Ambassadors, a student group that organizes and hosts hands-on science workshops and science shows for the community. She also plans on getting involved with Student Programs for Urban Development, and is especially interested in joining students who visit retired Jesuit priests living at Campion House in Weston, Mass.
