Following the success of last year’s Jesuit Amazing Race, in which about 50 students participated in a scavenger hunt inspired by the popular TV show “The Amazing Race,” organizers are again sponsoring the event as part of this year’s Jesuit Heritage Week. They’ve even created a Web-based alumni version of the game.
On Sept. 23 at 9 a.m., the first clue will be e-mailed to all Holy Cross students, says Jonathan Mulrooney, assistant professor of English and tight-lipped organizer behind the event. Like last year, students who choose can try to solve the clue, which will lead to a specific location on campus where they will find another clue, and so on until the final location.
Students may work individually or in teams of up to four. All teams should “cross the line” within 24 to 48 hours. Last year’s winning team completed the game in four hours.
Also like last year, Mulrooney fails to offer any substantive details.
Number of questions? “More than five and less than 50,” he says.
Tips? “There will be more fun clues and riddles this year. Working knowledge of Jesuit history, and Holy Cross history, will help. And a little Latin and French won’t hurt!”
That narrows it down.
Students will need to turn in a worksheet at the end of the race to ensure they’ve visited each of the locations. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three student finishes: First place $250, second place $150, third place $100.
Alumni will be able to submit answers — albeit to different questions — through an online form that will also be e-mailed on the morning of Sept. 23, says Tom Cadigan, associate director of athletic fundraising. The deadline for alumni is Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. EDT.
A $100 Holy Cross Bookstore gift certificate will be issued to the first alumnus/a to respond with all correct answers. All other alumni who respond correctly before deadline will have their names placed in a raffle with the chance to win one of five $20 gift certificates to the bookstore.
