Privilege and Racism to be Explored by Prominent Activist

WORCESTER, Mass. – Tim Wise, a prominent anti-racist writer and activist, will give a talk titled “Race Is Not a Card: White Privilege, Institutional Racism and the Ongoing Struggle for Justice” on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. in Suites B/C of the Hogan Campus Center.

The talk will address privilege, racism, and what this means for both majority and minority groups.

Wise is the director of the Association for White Anti-Racist Education based in Nashville, Tenn. and author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son (Soft Skull Press, 2005) and Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White (RoutledgeFalmer, 2005).

On Nov. 4, Wise was featured on ABC’s “20/20” which devoted two hours to highlighting white privilege in America. A Tulane University graduate, he has been the guest speaker at more than 400 college campuses, including Harvard, Stanford, and the law schools at Yale, Columbia and Vanderbilt universities.

The event is sponsored by the Multicultural Peer Educators (MPE) in the Office of Multicultural Education and the Office of the Chaplains.
