Popular Indian Singer to Perform at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Shubha Mudgal, one of the finest classical singers of today, will perform with her ensemble of five musicians on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. in Brooks Concert Hall at the College of the Holy Cross. There will be a pre-concert presentation by Shirish Korde, professor and chair of the music department at Holy Cross, at 7 p.m. The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the music department and the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture.

Joining her ensemble is the renowned virtuoso tabla player Aneesh Pradhan. Together Mudgal and Pradan established Underscore Records Pvt. Ltd., an independent online record label.

Mudgal has trained with some of the most famous musicians and musicologists in India, making her one of the most versatile and popular performers in her country. She works with Hindustani classical music, khayal, thumri-dadra, and Indi pop music. Mudgal has also been praised as a composer.

She has received numerous awards including the Padma Shri from the Government of India (2000), Gold Plaque Award for Special Achievement in Music at the 34th Chicago International Film Festival (1998), and Best Music Direction in a non-feature film for her music in the documentary Amrit Beej by Meera Dewan at the National Film Festival of India (1996). She has also served as a consultant for many music labels and companies, including Virgin (India).
