Scarlett Piantini ’11 sees the world as her classroom.
A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, she attended high school at United World College-USA in New Mexico. Today, Piantini is living out her school’s mission which calls for making “education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.”
This summer, she organized a summer camp in her home country for Haitian and Dominican children to foster racial equality.
Now, Piantini is studying in Strasbourg, France for the year, “which is kind of perfect because after Geneva, it is the second hub for international organizations,” she says. It is also ideal because she’ll get to improve her French, a necessary skill as she continues to work toward improved Dominico-Haitian relations.
Piantini, who has designed her own multidisciplinary major titled Global Institutions and Law at Holy Cross, has always wanted to study abroad because she thinks her career may lead to Europe. Eager to learn more about French law and international law, her time abroad will help her decide what area in the field of international relations she likes most.
A self-described “history freak,” Piantini wants to see everything — including non-tourist attractions like de Gaulle’s village and Edith Piaf’s house. Needless to say, she plans on doing a lot of traveling through Europe.
