Philosophy Major Studying in Scotland Chronicles Her Year Abroad

At Holy Cross, opportunities abound to study in another country and students are encouraged to enhance their college careers with an overseas experience. Many juniors participate in the College’s full-year Study Abroad program, which has established relationships with acclaimed universities throughout the world.

Micaela English ’08, a philosophy major, will spend the 2006-07 academic year at St. Andrews in Scotland. She has decided to study at St. Andrews because of “its academic reputation, its rich history, and (of course!) the golf.”

In addition to her coursework and immersion into a new culture, she’s looking forward to meeting new people, forming new relationships with fellow students from Holy Cross who are also going to St. Andrews, and traveling to various parts of Europe. She’s also excited that she’ll be close enough to visit some family members who live in Hungary, her mother’s native land. Her other goals include trying out for the St. Andrews tennis team and joining the philosophy club.

Holy Cross has been working with St. Andrews since the 1994-95 academic year and its popularity has increased over the years despite high admission standards. This year 15 Holy Cross students will be studying at St. Andrews.

English, who’s considering a career in journalism, will keep us posted on her Scottish adventures — from her mid-September departure from her hometown of Weston, Conn., to her final days in Scotland in early June 2007 — in this inaugural Holy Cross study abroad blog.
