Graduate study is a route that many Holy Cross students pursue after Commencement. Not only is it an opportunity to delve even more deeply into an academic discipline, a graduate program also offers a different approach to the academic life: new research challenges, an introduction to the competitive academic job market, economic realities, and more.
Tim Duffy ’06, a recent alum and Ph.D. candidate in the English department at The University of Virginia, is taking on this new endeavor. Armed with departmental and outside funding, a trunk full of books, and a hope of joining the great academic conversation, Tim is at UVA trying to chase these dreams.
One thing is clear, though. Tim isn’t an undergrad any more. This blog will record Tim’s struggle to be a “grown up,” taking care of financial concerns, dealing with a completely new locale, and establishing a budding career from the ground up. Breaking away from the stereotype of graduate school delaying “real life,” Tim’s blog will show how higher education past the B.A. is a new, exciting, and independent adventure.
