Parents of Bulimia Victim to Present Talk on Eating Disorders at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Tom and Doris Smeltzer, the parents of a bulimia victim who died at the age of 19, will tell the story of their daughter through photographs, journal entries, and poems on Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in Hogan Jenks Suites B/C at the College of the Holy Cross. The event is free and open to the public.

After a 13-month struggle with bulimia, Pitzer College student Andrea Smeltzer died in her sleep when an electrolyte imbalance caused her heart to stop in 1999. Her parents, from Napa, Calif., describe the factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder, the warning signs, and approaches to use when speaking with a suspected sufferer, as well as the necessary components of an effective treatment plan. Their information has been gained from extensive personal research, experts in the field and via their daughter’s words.

The talk is sponsored by NEED: the Nutrition, Exercise and Eating Disorders Peer Educators, the Counseling Center, the Office of Wellness Programming, the athletics department, the psychology department, and Health Services.
