Onyemaechi ’79 to help community examine ‘our roots and values’

Onye Onyemaechi ’79 will perform and give a talk on April 16 in Loyola Ballroom from 2 to 5:45 p.m. in an event titled "A Celebration of Human Spirit with Onye Onyemaechi." Members of the Caribbean African Student Assembly (CASA) will perform. The event is free.

Onye offers spiritual readings and consultations in the mystical African tradition providing an overview of the important issues, profound insights and clarity necessary to make healthy life choices. He conducts performances, events and retreats emphasizing education, spiritual growth and healing, as well as organizational and youth development.

A spiritual healer, counselor and educator, Onye will be performing traditional African drumming and dance and sharing stories of village life. Audience members will be able to engage in these activities.

Onye is coming to campus after members of a workshop by the Reflective Practice Group brainstormed ways to "educate and excite the greater campus community about reflection and to inspire meaningful conversation," according to student coordinator Renee Lavardiere. "Onye’s message calls for us to expand our conscious understanding of ourselves and other cultures and to examine our roots and values."

"Our hope in asking Onye to come back to Holy Cross was that he would shed some light on the process of his vocational discernment beginning with his time at Holy Cross and extending to the present," Lavardiere said.
