WORCESTER, Mass. – Five members of the College of the Holy Cross faculty have been honored with the Arthur J. O’Leary Faculty Recognition Award. These $10,000 honoraria are given each year by the Senior Vice President to senior faculty members who make a special contribution to Holy Cross through their teaching, scholarship and/or service. The O’Leary Awards are intended to honor the recipients, to advance their work, and to encourage other members of the faculty to attain a high level of professional achievement and to be a positive influence in lives of students. The 2006 recipients include:
Susan Amatangelo, associate professor in the modern languages and literatures department, earned her Ph.D. in Italian literature from Harvard University. While at Holy Cross, she has been a member of the Academic Affairs Council as well as a study abroad liaison for students studying in Florence. Founding the Holy Cross chapter of the Italian honor society, Gamma Kappa Alpha, in 1998, Amatangelo has served as both president and vice president of the Holy Cross chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She is the author of Figuring Women: A Thematic Study of Giovanni Verga’s Female Characters (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2004). Amatangelo is a resident of Worcester.
Mark C. Hallahan, associate professor of psychology, received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was an assistant professor at Clemson University (S.C.) from 1996-99 and a lecturer at Harvard University from 1995-96. A member of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology and the American Psychological Society, Hallahan serves as a reviewer for several professional journals, including the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and the Journal of Applied Social Psychology. He is a resident of Holden.
Marybeth Kearns-Barrett, associate chaplain in the Office of the College Chaplains and director of Service and Social Justice Programs, has been a chaplain at Holy Cross since 1991. She serves as faculty advisor to Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD), the largest student organization of community service programs on campus, and the Student Coalition for Hunger and Homelessness (SCOHAH). She coordinates the Post-Graduate Volunteer Fair and advises students interested in full-time volunteer work following graduation in programs such as the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. She also supervises the SPUD Academic Year Lilly Interns and is president of the board of directors of Abby’s House, a shelter for battered women and their children. She lives in Worcester.
Catherine A. Roberts, associate professor of mathematics and computer science, earned her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. A member of the Holy Cross faculty since 2001, she is the director of the Environmental Studies program. Roberts has received several research grants, including three from the National Science Foundation (NSF). She is editor of Natural Resource Modeling, an interdisciplinary journal published by the Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium and the Resource Modeling Association. Roberts lives in Jefferson.
Ward J. Thomas, associate professor of political science, earned his Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University. A member of the Holy Cross faculty since 1997, he has served on a number of College committees, including the Student Life Council, the Curriculum Committee, the Committee on Academic Standing, and the Faculty Affairs Committee. He is the author of The Ethics of Destruction: Norms and Force in International Relations (Cornell University Press, 2001), and his articles have appeared in International Security, Security Studies, Armed Forces & Society, Sciences Humaines (Paris), The Boston Globe, and other publications. He is currently working on a book about normative change and the use of force by nonstate actors. He lives in West Boylston.
The Arthur J. O’Leary Faculty Recognition Awards have been made possible by an endowed gift to the College from Thomas H. O’Leary ’54, former President, CEO and Chairman of Burlington Resources, in memory of his father, Arthur J. O’Leary.
