On Dec. 4, the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Program presented a $3,000 check to Rachel’s Table, a Worcester organization which supports soup kitchens and food pantries in the local area.
The money was raised through meal donations. Many students chose to fast on Nov. 17 for one to three meals so that the cost of those meals could go to Rachel’s Table.
“The organization was chosen because of its history of providing aid to the needy in Worcester through food pantries, soup kitchens, and a milk fund,” says Midshipman Brynn Olson ’10, an English major from Palm Harbor, Fla. “Energized that 100 percent of the proceeds would go to the needy, many midshipmen donated their time for a week to solicit and collect donations from classmates.
“With the help of Kimball Dining Services and the support of the College, Holy Cross students have once again demonstrated their desire to help those in need.”
Midshipmen Olson, Rachel Baker ’12, a psychology major from Mystic, Conn., and Liam Thompson ’12, a history major with a Middle East Studies minor from Palo Alto, Calif., presented the check with John Bishop, NROTC executive officer, and Christopher Reinke, NROTC marine officer instructor. Charlotte Holler, community relations coordinator for the Student Government Association, was also present.
Carla Szymanksi, director of Rachel’s Table, expressed her thanks for the donation and said it was sorely needed this year.
