In a Telegram & Gazette Sunday Sitdown, Elizabeth Canning, the new Title IX director at the College of the Holy Cross, discusses her time as a public defender, new job, family and goals for Holy Cross.
"I look forward to working with the many stakeholders across campus and weaving gender-based inclusion efforts into community discussions,” she tells the Telegram & Gazette. “We have multiple departments and individuals who actively engage in discussions around supporting an inclusive and safe environment. I plan on working with, and learning from, them and connecting my work to ongoing efforts.”
She said that serving as a juvenile public defender for six years in Rhode Island, primarily in Providence, made her a better, more compassionate person and led her to a career in nondiscrimination efforts in higher education. “I relished victories in persuading the court that children who struggled with financial and/or emotional support and often lived in unsafe or unhealthy environments were entitled to appropriate services and support,” she told the media outlet.
