More Than 20 Holy Cross Graduates Will ‘Teach For America’

WORCESTER, Mass. – A total of 23 graduates of the College of the Holy Cross will be returning to the classroom next year. But it won’t be in the role of students. The graduates, lured by a commitment to public service, will be standing in front of chalkboards as part of the Teach for America program.

Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity.

For the first time, Teach For America is the top employer of Holy Cross seniors.

The 23 corps members will be teaching in 11 different regions and will be collectively impacting the lives of nearly 4,000 students over two years.

Last year’s 2,400 entering corps members were chosen from a pool of nearly 19,000 applicants. Accepted members are graduates of some of the country’s most respected colleges and universities. This year’s numbers are not yet public.

According to its Web site, the Teach for America admissions staff seeks “candidates who have a proven leadership record (whether in school, work, or extracurricular activities), and who demonstrate leadership qualities such as the ability to influence and motivate others and the ability to persevere through difficult challenges.”
