Mexican Journalist and Human Rights Defender to Speak at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Jaime Luis Brito Vazquez, a journalist and avid defender of human rights, will give a presentation titled “The Mexican Perspective: A Critical, yet Often Unheard Version of Reality” on Wednesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. in room 328 of the Hogan Campus Center at the College of the Holy Cross. The event is sponsored by the chaplains’ office and Pax Christi Holy Cross, a chapter of Pax Christi USA, the Catholic peace organization. It is free and open to the public.

Brito Vazquez is a regular speaker on the Holy Cross Mexican Immersion Program, offering a difficult and challenging critique of the relationship between Mexico and the U.S. He enjoys the format of questions and answers and looks forward to engaging with Holy Cross students and faculty.

Brito Vazquez, born in Morelos, Mexico, received his B.A. in psychology from the University in Morelos, Mexico.  As a youth, Brito Vasquez was deeply involved in the Base Christian Community movement and with youth groups. Later, he began to work with non-governmental organizations struggling for democratic elections and the rights of indigenous peoples in Mexico. He has been a steady voice in the struggle for human rights in Mexico for numerous years.

He is a decisive journalist and an avid of defender of human rights, environmental protection, native cultures, and the freedom to express one’s thoughts and beliefs without fear of persecution. Since 2001, Brito Vazquez has been a reporter at La Jornada newspaper at both state and national levels and served as an editor of La Jornada Morelos, one of Mexico’s leading newspapers. He is a regular, contributing journalist on public TV and radio in Morelos.
