'Master of Chemical Demonstrations' to Stage Show at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The College of the Holy Cross will present “Hogwarts at Holy Cross IX: The Joy of Chemistry” science series on Oct. 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. The event will feature hands-on science activities for the whole family and a spectacular chemistry show by Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, a world-renowned chemist and chemical educator. It is intended for children (through 12th grade) and families in Worcester, particularly the College Hill and South Worcester communities. The event is free.

Shakhashiri, professor of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is described as “the master of chemical demonstrations.” The Encyclopedia Britannica cites him as the “dean of lecture demonstrators in America.” His scholarly publications, including the multi-volume series, Chemical Demonstrations: A Handbook for Teachers of Chemistry, are models of learning and instruction that have been translated into several languages.

The event is sponsored by the Central Massachusetts section of the American Chemical Society and Holy Cross.
