Making the Most of It

Fourth-year students at Holy Cross set course for final semester by attending Senior Convocation

Holy Cross’ annual Senior Convocation is scheduled for Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel with a dinner reception to follow in the Hogan Ballroom.

WHAT IT IS Senior Convocation is a "for seniors, by seniors" event. Students reflect on the challenges and accomplishments of their first three-and-a-half years of college and consider how they will use their remaining time at Holy Cross to shape their lives and their life’s work.

KEY QUESTION Through a series of talks, personal stories, music and performances, seniors are challenged to ask themselves, “How can I best use the time I have left at Holy Cross to shape the person I want to become?”

TACKLING THE QUESTION Central to the event are the brief talks by several members of the senior class chosen as “Convocation Scholars” by a committee of students, faculty and staff. The seniors selected use the opportunity to reflect on what they’ve gained, who they’ve become, and what they will take from their experiences during their days at Holy Cross.

WHO WILL SPEAK Tara Dragoon, president of the class of 2009, will deliver a welcome/introduction speech. Mary Kate Brennan and Cara Joyce are serving as scholar speakers.

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS The convocation will include “images” speakers, who will give brief presentations on memorable landmark campus scenes (e.g., The Mass of the Holy Spirit, and saying goodbye to parents). Speakers include James Cappabianca, Colin Cunningham, Karleigh Rose Pettit and Taylor Cormack.

WHO WILL PERFORM Ali Lincoln will read two self-penned poems. Matt Partain and Kendra Cerretani will perform a cover of John Mayer’s song “Say.” Kena Roxas and David Sheerin will play an instrumental version of “1st and 2nd movements from Sonata in G Minor” by Henry Eccles.

WHAT ELSE? Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., president, and G. Earl Peace, dean of the class of 2009, will also speak.
