Twelve of us participating in the Washington Semester Program have witnessed history unfold before our eyes, as Senator Obama laid claim to the presidency of the United States at 11 p.m. We didn"t miss the opportunity to show our support for such a historic moment in American history.
Early in the evening, we ended up meeting at a sports bar in Arlington for dinner, and after grabbing some snacks, moved over to our residence, the Warwick House. From there we watched the returns until 11, when the final states broke and CNN (we even voted on our news coverage!) declared Senator Obama the victor. We watched as a gracious Senator McCain conceded and threw his support to the new President-elect, and then intently listened to Senator Obama's speech held in Chicago.
We then decided to do something that truly made the night memorable: we took to the streets of Washington D.C, ending up in the back of the White House. Honking cars and trucks, signs, and chanting aside, it truly was a spectacle to witness.
The fall 2008 D.C. semester is another storied chapter in the already rich history of the Washington Program.
