The percentage of married Americans (52%) is at a historic low, according to a recent article by the Telegram and Gazette. The news did not surprise Edward H. Thompson, Jr., professor of sociology at the College of the Holy Cross, who was interviewed for the article and explained that the combination of longer life spans and individuals choosing to marry later is contributing to the low statistic.
With these changes in social norms—including young peoples’ interest in establishing themselves professional and financially before committing to marriage—Thompson sees the traditional concept of marriage as “old language that doesn’t fit cultural lifestyles.”
