WORCESTER, Mass. – Robert Dudley, a member of the College of the Holy Cross Class of 2008, has been awarded The Mansfield Visiting Student Prize for Trinity Term 2007 from Mansfield College, Oxford. The award is given to those whose academic performance over the course of the term has been considered to be outstanding.
Dudley, a classics major and German minor from Canton, Mass., studied abroad at Mansfield College, Oxford this past year, where he took courses in "Hesiod and Homer" and "German Philosophy.” In addition to his studies, Dudley served as a student representative for Music at Oxford, a classical concert series, and was a member of the riding club and French and German societies.
On the Holy Cross campus Dudley is involved in ballroom dancing, Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD), which is the largest student organization of community service programs on campus, the classics honor society, the German club, and is one of the chief student editors for The Purple, a literary magazine.
Brittain Smith, associate director of study abroad at Holy Cross, says of Dudley, “He is one of the brightest and best-read undergraduate students I’ve encountered in twenty years of teaching.”
Dudley intends to apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which provides full funding for study at Cambridge University in England; the Marshall Scholarship, an elite award which funds a degree from any British university; the prestigious Fulbright award, which allows students to teach and conduct research in foreign countries upon their graduation; and the Watson Fellowship, a one-year grant for independent study and travel outside of the U.S. After graduation he hopes to continue with classics in graduate school.
