Holy Cross Student Earns Competitive Beinecke Scholarship

WORCESTER, Mass. – Robert F. Dudley ’08, a classics major with a German minor currently studying abroad at Oxford University, is one of only 20 college students nationwide selected to receive a 2007 Beinecke scholarship. Each scholar receives $2,000 after graduating from college and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. He is a resident of Canton.

Dudley plans on earning a Ph.D. in classics. In graduate school, he wants to specialize in the theme of the hero in Greco-Roman literature. He hopes to become a professor at Oxford.

“There is one literary magnum opus I hope to publish,” he said. "I intend it to be a post-modern epic that revitalizes the classical spirit in a fresh, new way.”

At Oxford, Dudley is in the riding club and a sponsor for music at Oxford. Next year at Holy Cross, he will be the editor of The Purple, the College’s literary magazine.

Established in 1971, the Beinecke Scholarship Program provides scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise.
