Holy Cross Seelos Film Series Fall 2008 Schedule

The following films will be shown at the Seelos Theater at Holy Cross. All films are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. For additional information, please call the Seelos Theater Box Office at 508-793-2455.

The Lives of Others – Rated R Wed., Sept. 17: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Sebastian Koch and Ulrich Muehe. The film takes place in East Germany before the Wall came down in the 1980s. An agent of the secret police is conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, and finds himself increasingly caught up in their world and secrets. It’s a world of paranoia and betrayal where you can’t trust anyone.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian – Rated PG Fri., Sept. 19 and Sat., Sept. 20: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Ben Barnes and Anna Popplewell. Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter find themselves back in Narnia in the middle of a battle between Prince Caspian and the evil Lord Miraz in the second of the Chronicles films.

Black Book – Rated R Wed., Sept. 24: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Sebastian Koch and Carice van Houten. Set in the Netherlands in 1944, where the Holocaust is still very much alive with Nazi occupation. Rachel, a Jewish singer, attempts to break into the Gestapo Headquarters in this exciting personal adventure, filled with action, suspense, betrayal and melodrama.

Shine a Light – Rated PG-13 Fri., Sept 26 and Sat., Sept. 27: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring the Rolling Stones. Martin Scorsese brings his Academy Award-winning talent to this career-spanning documentary, with special footage from a Rolling Stones concert in Beacon, N.Y. It’s a very intimate look at a classic rock band.

The 11th Hour – Rated PG Wed., Oct. 1: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio. This documentary examines the state of the global environment in the wake of recent natural disasters. It considers both radical and practical solutions for restoring the ecosystems of the earth before it’s too late.

Iron Man – Rated PG-13 Fri., Oct. 3 and Sat., Oct. 4: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. Downey is Tony Stark, a billionaire playboy, scientist and successful weapons manufacturer. After a life-threatening situation, he decides to use his technology and products to fight evil in this sci-fi thriller.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley – Not Rated Wed., Oct. 8: Showings at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Starring Cillian Murphy. In this historical drama, two Irish brothers first fight the Black and Tans and then each other as Ireland struggles to gain independence from Britain.

Molière – Rated PG-13 Wed., Oct. 15: Showings at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Starring Romain Duris and Laura Morante. Duris is Molière, the 17th century genius comic playwright/actor in this fictionalized account (think Shakespeare in Love) of his successes and failures.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Rated PG-13 Fri., Oct. 17 and Sat., Oct. 18: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Harrison Ford and Karen Allen. Indy is off on a new adventure, this time in South America, as he seeks the magical crystal skull to keep it out of the hands of the Communists.

Standard Operating Procedure – Rated R Wed., Oct. 22: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Directed by Errol Morris. This documentary examines the incidents of abuse and torture of suspected terrorists at the hands of U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison.

Taxi to the Dark Side – Rated R Wed., Oct, 29: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Directed by Alex Gibney. This documentary provides an in-depth look at U.S. torture practices in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay. The film revolves around an innocent Afghani taxi driver who was tortured and killed in 2002.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Rated PG-13 Fri., Oct. 31: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Jason Segel and Kristen Bell. Segel is Peter Bretter, a devastated vacationer in Hawaii longing to forget now ex-girlfriend, Sarah (Bell). What he doesn’t know is that Sarah picked the same hotel for her vacation, and that she’s bringing her new boyfriend along.

There Will Be Blood – Rated R Wed., Nov. 5: Showings at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano. In Texas, a prospector (Day-Lewis) finds oil on a farm and misleads the farm-owning family. A sociopath, he then crushes anyone who dares to stand in his way. The story considers family, religion, greed, oil and, of course, blood.

Kung Fu Panda – Rated PG Fri., Nov. 7 and Sat., Nov. 8: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring the voices of Dustin Hoffman and Jack Black. It’s the tale of Po, a slacker panda who wants to be a kung fu expert. He struggles in his training against the other kung fu masters, until he is put to the ultimate test against the treacherous snow leopard Tai Lung.

The Visitor – Rated PG-13 Wed., Nov. 12: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Richard Jenkins and Haaz Sleiman. A college professor undergoes a series of emotional upheavals after he befriends a Syrian musician and his Senegalese girlfriend, both of whom he finds living in his apartment when he returns home after a conference.

Wanted – Rated R Fri., Nov. 14 and Sat., Nov. 15: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. A frustrated office worker (Freeman) meets a woman (Jolie) who recruits him into a secret society where death orders are given by fate itself. He discovers he’s the son of an assassin, and that he’s inherited some of his father’s superhuman killing powers.

Reprise – Rated R Wed., Nov. 19: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Espen Klouman Hoiner and Anders Danielsen. In a film burning with the passion of literature and youth, two friends set out to become great writers. This fast-paced story shows the grim depression of reality that slams the brilliant aspirations of these two friends.

WALL-E – Rated G Fri., Nov. 21 and Sat., Nov. 22: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring the voices of Fred Willard and Ben Burtt. In a future where pollution and trash prevent humans from living on earth, a small waste-collecting robot named WALL-E accidentally travels through space after his new friend, Eve, and together they take on the fate of humanity.

Mongol – Rated R Wed., Dec. 3: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Tadanobu Asano and Channing Tatum. This film is based on the life of a slave, Genghis Khan, and deals with his early struggles and his first love before he conquers half of the world.

The Dark Knight – Rated PG-13 Fri., Dec. 5 and Sat., Dec. 6: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. Batman (Bale) strives to bring justice to Gotham City and to do so he must defeat a psychopathic killer called The Joker (Ledger).

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army – Rated PG-13 Fri., Dec. 12 and Sat., Dec. 13: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Ron Perlman and Selma Blair. He’s back, the kitten-loving hero from hell. Hellboy (Perlman) must once again step up to save humanity from the villains, who want to bring hell on earth.
