Holy Cross Religious Studies Professor Honored With 2021 Excellence in Mentoring Award

Tat-siong Benny Liew, the Class of 1956 Professor in New Testament Studies and professor of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross, was honored with the 2021 Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Forum for Theological Exploration. Each year, FTE honors one individual within the forum who mentors students and peers and displays excellence, persistence and a holistic approach in their mentoring of scholars of color.

"Dr. Liew is that rare combination of scholar, mentor, administrator, dreamer and pragmatist," said FTE's Senior Director of Learning Design Dr. Patrick B. Reyes. "He has endured what our field and discipline is, and created conditions for future generations of scholars and administrators so they do not have to endure, but rather, thrive in their work."

In addition to mentoring rising scholars of color, Dr. Liew is the chair of the Society of Biblical Literature's Council and serves as the series editor of "T&T Clark's Study Guides to the New Testament." He is also the author of "Politics of Parousia" (1999) and "What Is Asian American Biblical Hermeneutics?" (2008).

Liew shared his personal sentiment on this recognition: "It's a humbling honor to be a mentor. It allows me to accompany some incredibly bright and wonderful people in their doctoral studies, knowing that their future scholarship and career will impact future generations to not only expand the demographics but also enrich the disciplines of our academy in transformative ways."
