In a recent Boston Parents Paper article, Danuta Bukatko, professor of psychology and distinguished professor of education at the College of the Holy Cross, commented on the challenges of parenting tweens and teenagers.
According to Bukatko, no matter how children change, certain fundamental basics of parenting do not change, including strong social support, engagement and consistent role modeling of desired behaviors and actions. When parents stay involved in their children’s lives, she says, parents can promote “independence and responsible decision making but still fundamentally maintain certain parameters.”
“It can be a challenging time, but sometimes you’d be surprised at how lessons you think have not been absorbed, really are,” said Bukatko. “You don’t see the outcomes until a little bit later, but it’s worth the investment because the outcomes can be really great.”
