Holy Cross Music Professor Nominated for Two Grammy Awards

Golijov has received total of five nominations

WORCESTER, Mass. – Osvaldo Golijov, associate professor of music at the College of the Holy Cross has been nominated for two Grammy awards for his opera Ainadamar (Fountain of Tears).

The Argentine-born Golijov was nominated in the categories of Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. “Ainadamar” means “fountain of tears” in Arabic, and is the place where, in 1936, Spanish poet Federico García Lorca was murdered by Fascist soldiers during the early stages of the Spanish Civil War. The opera is centered around Lorca’s death, and the mourning of Margarita Xirgu, interpreted by acclaimed soprano Dawn Upshaw.

The two nominations add to Golijov’s three previous Grammy award nominations. In 2003, he received nominations in the categories of Best Chamber Music Performance and Best Classical Contemporary Composition for his chamber music release Yiddishbuk. Last year, he was nominated in the category of Best Classical Contemporary Composition for a song cycle titled Ayre.

The 49th Grammy Awards are to be handed out Feb. 11. The nominations were announced yesterday.

Golijov is working on the score of director Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming film Youth Without Youth.

In January and February, Lincoln Center presented a Festival called “The Passion of Osvaldo Golijov,” featuring multiple performances of his major works, chamber music, late nights of Tango and Klezmer, and a night at the Film Society.

Golijov earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a member of the Holy Cross music department since 1991.
