Munich – Rated R.
Wed., Aug. 30: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Eric Bana and Daniel Craig. Israel’s violent response to the 1972 terrorist kidnappings in Munich leads to moral problems for those carrying out the assassinations. The film depicts a sad world of escalating violence that is ultimately pointless as it solves none of the problems it is being used for.
Inside Man – Rated R.
Fri., Sept. 1 and Sat. Sept. 2: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster. An enjoyably engaging and well-crafted caper/thriller about the perfect bank robbery.
United 93 - Rated R.
Wed., Sept. 6: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring J.J. Johnson and Polly Adams. This honest and brutal look at a shattering event is neither exploitative nor manipulative.
V for Vendetta – Rated R.
Fri., Sept. 8 and Sat., Sept. 9: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving and John Hurt. The Wachowski’s (The Matrix trilogy) give a glimpse into a totalitarian future that’s neither far enough away in time nor from current realities. Can V dispatch the deeply evil villains who rule this world?
Brick - Rated R.
Wed., Sept. 13: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lukas Haas. This smart film takes the character types and patter of old film noir mysteries to the cinderblock world of a contemporary high school.
Duma - Rated PG.
Fri., Sept. 15 and Sat., Sept. 16: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Alexander Michaeletos and Campbell Scott. Critics rave about this story of a cheetah cub rescued and adopted by a South African boy and his father. What will happen when they have to move to the city?
Thank You for Smoking - Rated R.
Wed., Sept. 20: Showings 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Aaron Eckhart and Maria Bello. In this glib and entertaining film, a lobbyist for Big Tobacco wrestles with his job and family responsibilities.
Mission: Impossible III - Rated PG-13.
Fri., Sept. 22 and Sat., Sept. 23: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames. Ethan Hunt is captured by a murderous villain who wants to kill him and his loved one. Will he escape? Will there be a Mission: Impossible IV?
Water - Rated PG-13.
Wed., Sept. 27: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Sarala. It’s 1930’s India and a luminous little girl struggles against the fate she shares with other outcast women.
X-Men: The Last Stand - Rated PG-13.
Fri., Sept. 29 and Sat., Sept. 30: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan. The future of mutants is in doubt. The government wants to eliminate them. What will the mutants do? Will they fight to survive or will they disappear?
The Proposition - Rated R.
Wed., Oct. 4: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Guy Pearce, Emily Watson and Danny Huston. In 19th century Australia an outlaw must kill one brother to save another. The film works as a bloody tale of frontier mayhem and as an allegory of Australia’s rise from chaos.
An Inconvenient Truth - Rated PG.
Wed., Oct. 11: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Al Gore. In this documentary, Al Gore uses scientific evidence to show global warming is resulting in a climate crisis.
The Da Vinci Code - Rated PG-13.
Fri., Oct. 13 and Sat., Oct. 14: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou. Will some people do anything, including committing murder, to keep us from learning the truth about the Holy Grail?
Keeping Up With the Steins - Rated PG-13.
Wed., Oct. 18: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Daryl Sabara and Jeremy Piven. A witty satire of bar mitzvah excesses as seen through the eyes of a horrified 13-year-old as she watches her wealthy parents’ meltdown as they try to compete.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest - Rated PG-13.
Fri., Oct. 20 and Sat., Oct. 21: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. Captain Jack is back and he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davy Jones. Pay up or it’s eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. Can Will and Elizabeth, their wedding on hold, help him out of this predicament?
The Heart of the Game - Rated PG-13.
Wed., Oct. 25: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring a Seattle high school’s girls’ team and their coach. We see their passion and energy, their training and healthy aggression but will it be enough to turn an average team into champions?
A Prairie Home Companion - Rated PG-13.
Wed., Nov. 1: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Woody Harrelson, Meryl Streep and Garrison Keillor. The film concerns a radio troupe’s last performance before the theatre in which they perform is sold.
Akeelah and the Bee - Rated PG.
Fri., Nov. 3: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Keke Palmer, Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. An 11-year-old prodigy rises from her under-performing South Los Angeles public school all the way to the National Spelling Bee. The film credibly dramatizes the plight of a truly gifted black child.
The Devil Wears Prada - Rated PG-13.
Wed., Nov. 8: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. What happens when a recent grad takes a job toiling for the domineering editor of a New York fashion magazine in this social comedy?
Superman Returns - Rated PG-13.
Fri., Nov. 10 and Sat., Nov. 11: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth. After a mysterious absence, the Man of Steel returns to fight his old nemesis Lex Luthor who is plotting to render him powerless. He must also face his old love Lois Lane who has moved on in his absence.
A Scanner Darkly - Rated R.
Wed., Nov. 15: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Robert Downey Jr. A rambling saga of addiction and junkie paranoia, it’s a serious film that serves as a counterpoint to the usual lightweight summer fare.
The Lake House - Rated PG.
Fri., Nov. 17 and Sat., Nov. 18: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. A mysterious romance in which a lonely doctor who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its newest resident, an architectural school dropout. Will love triumph?
Little Miss Sunshine - Rated R.
Wed., Nov. 29: Showings at 3 and 8 p.m. Starring Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette. It’s a funny, charming character comedy about a fractious clan traveling to a kiddy beauty pageant.
Miami Vice - Rated R.
Fri., Dec. 1 and Sat., Dec. 2: Showings at 7 p.m. Starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. In this stylish reinvention of the ’80’s TV action-laden detective story, Crockett and Tubbs go deep undercover to thwart a global drug-trafficking operation.
World Trade Center - Rated PG-13.
Fri., Dec. 8 and Sat., Dec. 9: Showing at 7 p.m. Starring Nicolas Cage, Michael Pena and Maggie Gyllenhaal. On 9/11 as the World Trade Towers burned, there were heroic rescuers who entered the buildings both before and after they collapsed. Some of them actually survived. This is their story.
