WORCESTER, Mass. – Eco-Action, a student organization at the College of the Holy Cross dedicated to the promotion of environmental awareness through education and local action, will sponsor “Trash or Treasure,” May 11 – 14, a movement that encourages students to leave unwanted items, such as lamps, office supplies, clothing, and books in designated areas in their residence halls. Students may also drop off expired electronics to be recycled. All books that are collected will be given to Whitney Street Books, a one-person business, which sells books online and donates the funds to the Worcester Trust for Public Land. All other items will be redistributed to Worcester-area organizations including the Dismas House, Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance, and the Salvation Army.
“Trash or Treasure” initiated last year and was inspired by similar initiatives at other colleges. Last year, the discarded items filled up two Salvation Army trucks and other smaller vehicles. All items were donated to Worcester organizations rather than ending up in the trash. Christina Kyriakos ’11, Eco-Action co-chair, was impressed with last years’ student involvement: “This year, we hope to continue to increase a student consciousness about sustainability by encouraging the student body to donate unwanted reusable items, to recycle expired electronics and accessories, but ultimately to reduce over-consumerism.”
All items collected in residence halls will be transferred daily to storage areas in Loyola Hall by various student volunteers, including numerous athletic teams. In Loyola Hall, these donated goods will be organized for appropriate charities.
This event is co-sponsored by Holy Cross’ Eco-Action, Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD), Student Programs and Involvement, physical plant, and residence life.
