Not many writers enjoy the level of success and accolades Emily Dickinson achieved. Over 150 years after her writing career began, her poems are still being taught in classrooms around the world. Now a new Apple TV+ show, "Dickinson," will give readers a glimpse into the life of the famed New England poet.
In an article for Fast Company, Susan Elizabeth Sweeney, Monsignor Murray Professor in Arts and Humanities in the English department at Holy Cross, comments on the extraordinary confidence Dickinson had in her own poetry, especially given the non-traditional academic background she came from. "I have always been amazed that Dickinson knew her own worth as a poet," Sweeney says.
Dickinson, according to Sweeney, took pride in her atypical style of writing, preferring to write in her own style rather than adapt to the norm. "I believe she was confident that her poems would be understood and appreciated," said Sweeney.
