Holy Cross Commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The College of the Holy Cross will mark the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., with a special program on Monday, Jan. 16, at noon in the Rehm Library.

"Before the Dream: Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." is free and open to the public. The program will feature video presentations and discussion centered around the decade of unrest preceding the historic 1963 march on Washington. During these years, America had been experiencing a period of struggle characterized by inequity, inequality, and injustice based upon its practices of segregation and Jim Crow laws. In the 1950s, a new movement of protest would arise, inspired by Rosa Parks' courage, and the mobilized response of many who had been oppressed.

As the voice of this new movement, Martin Luther King gave direction and vision to this work, which led to August 28, 1963, and Dr. King's address in Washington—subsequently referred to as the "I Have A Dream" speech.
