With help of alumnus, Daniele '07 lands coveted job at global investment bank

Business Acumen for Success

Francesco Daniele ’07 was one of 89 college students selected out of a pool of 6,000 applicants worldwide to intern at Goldman Sachs’ asset management summer analyst program during the summer of 2005.

The following summer, he completed another internship at the same firm — one of the world’s largest global investment banks — this time as a private wealth management summer financial analyst.

The internships, which he learned about through the Summer Internship Program, paid off. At the end of July, Daniele will start working at Goldman Sachs’ Investment Management Division, within the sub-group of Private Wealth Management.

An economics and accounting major from Longmeadow, Daniele was armed with an impressive resume when searching for internships: high GPA, previous experience with an import/export business, extracurricular involvement at Holy Cross, member of the varsity men’s soccer team, and fluent in Italian and Spanish. But it was Tom Osmond ’90, who was a vice president Goldman Sachs’ Human Resources department, who helped seal the deal.

“Without the help of Tom Osmond getting the job at Goldman Sachs would have been exponentially harder. He has always made himself available to answer all of my questions and has supported me throughout each interview process,” Daniele says.

Daniele is part of a large number of Holy Cross students who have benefited from the College’s highly successful alumni.

The Office of Alumni Relations offers a career network consisting of 3,600 Holy Cross alumni who are willing and able to offer fellow alumni and students career advice. That number keeps growing as more and more alumni are eager to offer their expertise to Crusaders, says Robert S. Wally ’68, coordinator of the Student and Alumni Career Network.

Without the internship experience, Daniele says he wouldn’t have had the advantage of landing a competitive job in the cutthroat field of business.

“I learned a great deal about finance and began to realize that it was a field I was extremely interested in. I owe a lot to the incredible professionals I met each summer and know I would not be where I am today without them.”

He also credits the stellar education he received at Holy Cross for preparing him to enter the work force.

“I think the education and work environment at Holy Cross definitely prepared me well to deal with the intense workload of the internships. The Summer Internship Program was instrumental in helping me obtain my internships, but it was my work ethic and determination that helped me secure a full time position,” he says.

As a financial analyst, his primary responsibility will be to assist investment professions as they manage relationships with ultra net worth individuals.

“In doing so, I provide clients with individual account and market information. I trade on the client’s account based on their own personal convictions or the ideas of our professionals. Additionally, I will research new business opportunities and prepare investment professionals with detailed analysis of performance and attribution for each client’s portfolio.”

Daniele has clear goals for the future.

“I aspire to obtain an MBA from a top business school and continue my career in the financial services industry. Futhermore, I would like to give back to Holy Cross as much as it has given me.

“I thank our incredible alumni network in providing Holy Cross students with these opportunities and mentoring us throughout.”
