Kirk Carapezza ’05, reporter and managing editor at WGBH/Boston Public Radio, took a behind the scenes look at the admissions process at the College of the Holy Cross. Carapezza sat in on early decision committee, where admissions counselors reviewed 23 applications.
In the piece, Ann McDermott, director of admissions, offered some tips on applications for prospective students. One thing she stressed was engagement: visiting the campus, having a Skype or phone interview with an admissions counselor, or sitting in on a class shows admissions counselors you’re interested in that particular school and gives them a chance to get to know you better in person.
“Just like a teacher in the classroom wants a student engaged, we want students engaged in the process with us. I think it makes for better discernment of what a good fit is for both them and for us,” McDermott told WGBH.
Holy Cross Magazine assigned a reporter to spend a year with the admissions staff as they worked to build a class. Read the feature in the winter issue.
