Feast of Holy Cross Celebrated at Special Mass on Campus

Fr. McFarland presides and delivers homily at College’s namesake feast day

On Sunday, Sept. 14, Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., president of Holy Cross, presided and preached at Mass on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

In his homily delivered in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel, Fr. McFarland spoke directly to first-year students who are members of the Montserrat cluster focused on “the Divine,” who attended the Mass. The Mass was one of four required common events for cluster members this fall; students did preparatory reading on the structure of the Catholic Mass and the veneration of the Holy Cross in the Middle Ages.

“Each of these four required common events focuses in a different way on the human encounter with the transcendent,” says Joanne Pierce, director of “the Divine” cluster and associate professor of religious studies. “This special celebration of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the titular feast of the College, offered a unique way for students to begin their exploration of this dimension of human life and culture.”

Fr. McFarland said that nothing captures the essence of who God is and how we can come to know God as well as the Cross. “The Cross reveals three truths that together shape the Christian understanding of God,” Fr. McFarland said. “They are: God is close; God cares; God acts.”

“The Divine” is one of the five thematic clusters in Montserrat, the College’s new universal program for first-year students designed to integrate more effectively academic, co-curricular and residential experiences.
