The Holy Cross men’s basketball team will travel to our nation’s capital on Friday to take on American University in the Patriot League Tournament championship game at the Bender Arena. The winner will earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
The nationally televised contest tips off at 4:45 p.m. EST on ESPN2. Members of the campus community will gather in Crossroads to view the game on a projection screen. Alternatively, the match can be heard on WWFX 100.1 FM, Worcester, or on the Web at worcesterpike.com.
Holy Cross alumni in the Washington area (and beyond) are snatching up tickets, and more than 30 students will travel to the game by bus. The Holy Cross Marching Band and cheerleaders will also make the trip.
Holy Cross enters the game with an 18-13 season record overall, with a strong 11-3 playoff record. American finished the regular season with a 23-7 record and holds a 13-1 playoff record for the 2009 season. This will be the 22nd face-off between the two teams, and Holy Cross holds the winning record in the overall series at 15-6.
This will be Holy Cross’ seventh trip to the Patriot League championship game in the last nine years, and the team is in search of their sixth League title. Their last title was captured two years ago with a 74-66 victory over Bucknell on March 9, 2007. The Crusaders also triumphed in 2003, 2002, 2001, and 1993.
The winner of the Patriot League title gets an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.
