WORCESTER, Mass. – Rev. Robert E. Manning, S. J., president emeritus of Weston Jesuit School of Theology and former provincial of the Society of Jesus, New England Province, died Monday, October 6 after a long struggle with cancer.
Born June 15, 1937 in Somerville, Mass., Fr. Manning entered the Jesuits on July 30, 1954. After studying philosophy at Weston College, he was assigned to teach at Baghdad College in Iraq from 1961 until 1964. He returned to Weston to study theology and was ordained at Boston College on June 10, 1967. From 1968 until 1970, he studied theology at Princeton Theological School, Princeton, NJ.
He taught theology at Holy Cross from 1970 until 1971, while also undertaking private studies. He was the College’s chaplain and a visiting lecturer in the religious studies department from 1971 until 1983. He was named rector in 1983.
In 1985, he was appointed provincial of the New England Province, serving until 1991. He was then named rector at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley in 1991, staying in that position until 1995. From 1996 to 2007, he was the president of the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, October 8 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, 28 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill. The funeral mass will follow at 7:30 p.m.
Burial will be at Campion Center in Weston on Thursday, October 9 at 10:30 a.m.
