Rinklin has been a member of the Holy Cross faculty since 2002. Her paintings start with the digital process, to create abstract images collected from a multitude of sources, including Baroque painting, microbiology, constellations, and natural history. These images are distorted and combined, then meticulously rendered in layers of space, rich with swirling saturated color. Recently, Rinklin’s work was on display at the exhibition “Big Bang! Abstract Painting for the 21st Century,” at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Mass., the Rhys Gallery in Boston, and a site-specific installation piece, Nuvolomondo, was on view at the Remis Sculpture Court at Tufts University from July 2006 to August 2007.
Schmidt, a member of the Holy Cross faculty since 1987, teaches courses in printmaking, book making and drawing, areas that she herself works in as part of her studio practice. For several years, she has created work that draws upon her experiences raising children, focusing her attention on the interactions between adults and children at family gatherings or larger community social events. The resulting small-scaled prints and drawings are an intimate portrait of childhood and adolescence as a state of transition or change, while her subjects interact with the world outside themselves.
The Cantor Art Gallery organizes comprehensive exhibitions of faculty artist work every three years. The current faculty exhibit is unique in that for the first time, the exhibition is being presented in two parts, enabling larger and a greater number of works to be featured by each artist.
Faculty artists included in Crossroads: Part I were Michael Beatty, associate professor of studio art; Robert ParkeHarrison, associate professor of studio art, and his wife Shana; Michael Demers, lecturer of studio art; Leslie Schomp, lecturer of studio art; and Tim Johnson, Cantor Art Gallery exhibitions preparatory.
