NAME Colleen Curran ’11
HOMETOWN Alpharetta, Ga.
AREAS OF STUDY Double major in English and medieval studies
WHY SHE’S STUDYING ABROAD “I knew that I wanted to study abroad before I even matriculated at Holy Cross. I thought that the experience of living and learning in a foreign country would expose me to new ideas, new cultures, and new people. As much as I love Holy Cross, I knew that I wanted to spend a year abroad to find out how to live by myself for a year while still meeting rigorous academic demands. And, of course, I wanted to see Europe.”
WHY SHE CHOSE OXFORD “Primarily for the academics, specifically the tutorial system. Because of the tutorial system’s independent research component, I knew that the program would lay a solid foundation for my senior year at Holy Cross and for future graduate work. In addition, I wanted to study at Oxford due to the amazing resources, specifically the faculty. My experience with the English department here has been superb and has also introduced connections for graduate and professional work. And, lastly, I fell in love with Oxford when I took a summer course here in 2008.”
HER EXPERIENCE SO FAR “Spending a year at Oxford has been one of the best decisions I’ve made (the first is obviously attending Holy Cross) for not only academic reasons, but personal reasons as well. My tutorials have challenged me and have formed me into a stronger student, both in writing and researching. And my experience of living abroad has introduced me to a new culture and new friends. I’m extremely grateful that Holy Cross has been able to provide me this opportunity.”
