A church with a “For Sale” sign. Remnants of a familiar logo on an empty store. Portraits of Americans facing today’s economic challenges at home and at work.
These are some of the images captured in black and white photos throughout the fall semester by 13 students in a visual arts class at Holy Cross.
David Gyscek ’96, studio arts coordinator and lecturer in the visual arts department, challenged students in his Bodies in Context introductory photography course to capture images depicting hardship and resilience during the Great Recession.
In an audio slideshow, Gyscek tells us what inspired the assignment, and his students share the stories behind their photos.
