Alumnae Share Professional Expertise for Cantor Gallery Exhibition and Symposium on Abstract Art

Three Holy Cross alumnae — all now working professionally in the art world — are sharing their expertise for the College"s major exhibition and accompanying symposium on abstract art.

Jay A. Clarke ’88, Charlotte Eyerman ’87, and Erin Murray Marra ’93 have been involved in various aspects of The Spiritual Landscapes of Adrienne Farb, 1980-2006, on display at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery on campus Aug. 30 to Dec. 16. Consisting of more than 29 works, this is the first survey exhibition of Adrienne Farb, an abstract painter who has spent her career rigorously working with color and shape. On Oct. 13, in conjunction with the exhibition, contemporary art curators, gallery owners, and critics from across the country will gather on the Holy Cross campus for the symposium titled “Contemporary Art and the Future of Abstraction.”

One of the show’s curators is Clarke, who is associate curator of prints and drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago. She worked with gallery director Roger Hankins and professor of visual arts Joanna Ziegler in developing the exhibition.

Eyerman, currently curator of modern art at the Saint Louis Museum, will be a guest speaker at the Oct. 13 symposium. She will join Carter Foster, curator of drawings, Whitney Museum of American Art; James Panero, managing editor, The New Criterion; Allyson Spellacy, director of the Angela Hanley Gallery in Los Angeles; Judith Tannenbaum, Richard Brown Baker curator of contemporary art at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design; and Karen Wilkin, contributor to The New Criterion, Partisan Review, and Hudson Review.

All three alumnae made contributions to the fully-illustrated catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition. Erin Murray Marra, who currently resides in the New York City area, wrote the comprehensive chronology of Farb’s career, and Clarke and Eyerman have contributed essays.
