WORCESTER, Mass. – Student representatives from several local colleges, including the College of the Holy Cross, are organizing a 5K Student Stampede for Habitat to raise funds for University House, a Habitat home scheduled to break ground this fall. The race will start from Worcester State College Sept. 24 at 4 p.m.
In addition to a pledge to finance construction, the students plan to generate sufficient volunteer labor from among their schools’ communities to build the structure alongside the intended homeowner. In addition to Holy Cross, local colleges represented in the group include Anna Maria College, Assumption College, Becker College, Clark University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Worcester State. Wellesley College students have also joined the effort.
Greater Worcester Habitat for Humanity is the local affiliate of the international organization that focuses community resources to build homes for families in need. To date, GWHFH has built more than 20 homes in the city and surrounding towns. A recent report to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development cites HFH as “one of the most successful homeownership programs for low income families.” Last summer, Habitat affiliates around the world celebrated the completion of their 200,000 home.
