Worcester’s Story

Holy Cross Magazine explores relationship between College and the City

Holy Cross Magazine focuses on the city’s past, present and future.

John B. Anderson ’57, former Worcester mayor and professor emeritus of history at Holy Cross, takes us on a journey through time — exploring the people and events that have shaped the city we know. In a sidebar, Kenneth J. Moynihan ’66 talks about his recent book titled A History of Worcester: 1674-1848 (The History Press).

To go along with the story, the online version of the magazine includes eight videos of students responding to the question, “What do you like about Worcester?” Readers can share their own thoughts online.

Several other stories in this issue are related to the city. On the 40th anniversary of Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD), the magazine takes a look back at the student organization’s rich history of volunteerism in social agencies, service programs, and schools in the Greater Worcester community.

Also, “hometown hero” Frederick H. Eppinger ’81, president and chief executive officer of the Hanover Insurance Group in Worcester, is profiled. Along with leading the highly-successful insurance institution, Eppinger has been deeply involved in the community, leading efforts to support the Hanover Theatre, and helping to bring the Tornadoes baseball team to Worcester.
