'Why Mega-Events May Not Mean Mega-Bucks'

The Wall Street Journal

In two separate articles by Carl Bialik of the Wall Street Journal, Victor Matheson, associate professor of economics at the College of the Holy Cross, commented on the economic impact of some of this summer"s "mega events," including the Olympics and the upcoming Republican and Democratic conventions.

While Matheson contends that it's too early to fully assess the impact of the Olympics, he does not expect London to report a great economic boost.  "The Olympics were great fun but not a great economic boon," he said.

With regard to the political conventions, he told the reporter that host cities will likely not see the $150 million to $200 million in projected economic benefit, because "the city essentially shuts down except for the convention.”
