Holy Cross Magazine shares the ‘Joy of Reading’

What could be a better time to focus on the subject of reading? It’s not only summer (with those treasured moments of vacation reading), it’s also a historic moment in book publishing.

As the seventh and final installment in J.K. Rowling’s wildly popular Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, sets international sales records, the new issue of Holy Cross Magazine focuses on “The Joy of Reading.” The cover story explores the so-called demise of the book in the digital age. Holy Cross faculty and acclaimed alumni authors, including Poet Laureate Billy Collins ’63 and Pulitzer Prize-winner Edward P. Jones ’72, offer opinions about the state of the written word.

In a companion article, members of the College community — including President Michael C. McFarland, S.J., biology professor Mary Lee Ledbetter, and Fenwick Scholar Christina Baldor ’07 — give their recommendations for summer reading. (Yes, Harry Potter makes the list.)

Which book have you been spellbound by? What are you still planning to read this summer? The editors of Holy Cross Magazine have invited readers to join the conversation online. Read the recommendations to date.
