In a front page Telegram & Gazette article on Easter Sunday, Rev. Lloyd Baugh, S.J., International Jesuit Visiting Fellow at the College of the Holy Cross, shared his insights on the different portrayals of Jesus in film.
From Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ to Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ to the George Stevens classic The Greatest Story Ever Told, “making a movie about Jesus is problematic at best,” he said. “Filmmakers too often let their own interests vastly influence their attempts at interpreting the historical Jesus."
Fr. Baugh has taught numerous courses on theology and cinema and has extensively researched the political, cultural, and personal subtexts in films based on the Gospels.
