Silkroad Ensemble Residency at Holy Cross Featured in the Telegram & Gazette

Silkroad Ensemble's three-year residency at the College of the Holy Cross was recently featured in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, which reported on the innovative learning opportunities provided by the Grammy Award-winning Ensemble’s residency at the College.

According to the Telegram, through this collaboration, Holy Cross and Silkroad are creating a more engaging and interdisciplinary learning experience for students. During their residency, Silkroad musicians are participating in unique classes and workshops and other experiential art-making opportunities meant to encourage Holy Cross students to explore the intersection between music and other subjects, such as mathematics.

Reporter Richard Duckett joined a class lead by three members of the Ensemble, percussionists Haruka Fujii, John Hadfield and Shane Shanahan, and attended by Voice in Acting and Montserrat students studying graphic novels.

The three-year residency, the longest Silkroad has ever embarked in, is a unique opportunity for the ensemble to "get to know the people" at Holy Cross as well as the community, Shane Shanahan, one of Silkroad’s inaugural co-artistic directors, told the Telegram. Over the course of the residency, there are plans for further outreach in the Worcester community, including work with local K-12 schools and refugees resettled in the area.
