Argentinean-born composer and Loyola Professor of Music Osvaldo Golijov was recently nominated for the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards in the "Best Classical Contemporary Composition" for his recent work "Falling Out of Time."
A much-anticipated release from Golijov, the "Falling Out of Time" song cycle was based on a book of the same name by Israeli author and Man Booker International Prize winner David Grossman, and conceived for the Silkroad Ensemble, the award-winning musical collective created by acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
Workshops for the piece began in fall 2017 as part of Silkroad's three-year residency at Holy Cross through the Arts Transcending Borders initiative, and took place at the College's Thomas P. Joyce '59 Contemplative Center, a 52-acre site overlooking the Wachusett Reservoir and designed for the College's retreat programs. The collaboration culminated with the world premiere of the composition at Holy Cross' Brooks Concert Hall in October 2019.
"This recognition for 'Falling Out of Time' is especially meaningful for me, because the piece was made for and with my friends of Silkroad, and we created it and premiered it here at home, at Holy Cross," said Professor Golijov.
A member of the faculty at the College of the Holy Cross since 1991 and a MacArthur "Genius Grant" Fellow, Golijiov is considered one of the most important contemporary classical composers of our time. His most renowned piece is arguably "La Pasión según San Marcos" (2000), a telling of St. Mark's passion from the South American perspective, which The New York Times called "A millennial work of genius. A magnificent triumph."
Following the momentous debut of "Falling Out of Time," Golijov is set to premiere a new string quartet on October 7, 2021 called "Um Día Bom" (A Good Day), written for the acclaimed ensemble Brooklyn Rider and presented by the Celebrity Series of Boston.
