Renowned Composer and Music Professor Osvaldo Golijov Making National Headlines

Classical community is abuzz with praise for Mostly Mozart

World-renowned composer Osvaldo Golijov, Loyola professor of music at the College of the Holy Cross, has gained the attention of national media this summer in his role as composer-in-residence for Lincoln Center’s 2007 Mostly Mozart Festival.  Compared to classical music greats Mozart and Beethoven by New York Post  reporter Barbara Hoffman, Golijov is being praised by critics worldwide for bringing excitement and innovation to this year’s festival.

Working closely with artistic director Jane Moss and music director Louis Langree, Golijov helped to organize a series of concerts for the event, including works by Mozart, his predecessors, contemporaries, and related successors.  Golijov’s own Azul, described by The New York Times as “mesmerizing,” was performed opening night, and more of his music will be featured during the last week of the event.

Earlier this year, Golijov won two Grammy awards for Ainadamar in the categories of Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and was named Musical America’s 2006 Composer of the Year.  Golijov has been a member of the Holy Cross faculty for almost 17 years and has a strong commitment to both his students and the College’s mission.

Mostly Mozart continues through August 25 with a special performance of Golijov’s acclaimed St. Mark Passion featuring 16 Holy Cross students on August 18.
